When you say to yourselves, ‘Why have all these things happened to me?’ It’s because of the extent of your iniquity that your skirt has been lifted up, and your heels have suffered violence. 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good, who are accustomed to do evil.
In this scripture Jeremiah is warning the people about their pride and stubbornness. Does it not only lead you to sin, but over time it numbs you to it. Even under the threat of captivity, the Israelites refused to repent and run back towards the Lord. These people were so accustomed to sinning and doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord that they lost the ability to change themselves for the better. God was warning them before it became too late. They had become their own worst enemy.
Have you ever been stuck in a spiritual rut in your life before? You wake up and continue your normal routine with or without the Lord. You may even catch yourself sinning a little, but tell yourself “it’s not that bad” so it is ok. Everyone goes through this every now and then, even ministers do to. We are all human, but that is not an acceptable excuse for God. The reason why this is not acceptable is because as time goes by you start to go numb to those little sins. Some examples of these sins are lying, cursing, improper thoughts, watching nudity on television, and the list goes on and on. When this is happening the world and the lust for your flesh is putting a wedge between you and your Heavenly Father. The only difference between you and the Israelites is that you are not getting chased with swords and oppressed into physical slavery. You are wrapped up in spiritual bondage that satan will use against you to make you feel guilty so you don’t turn back to God. Have you ever knowingly did something wrong and felt guilty about it and didn’t repent for it. You may have just pretended like it never happened. You just let satan win another battle. Satan knows that lust, pride and other bad habits will move you farther away from the Lord.
There is good in this message and it is that the Lord wants to help change you for the better. You only have to repent and let Him know you want to get rid of your bondages and addictions. If you feel like you are going through this struggle now or know someone stuck in a spiritual rut, share this message with them. Do not let your pride keep you from humbling yourself before your Heavenly Father. Don’t put these spiritual matters off for tomorrow. If you know that you need to repent, get up and move. Don’t keep God waiting!
Do not boast about tomorrow; for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Since we are not promised tomorrow, make the choice to humble yourself and reflect on your past and current sins. Then seek the Lord for forgiveness. Don’t just seek the Lord, run to Him. Our God is an awesome God. He want you for how you are today and not what you could be tomorrow. If you are waiting to change yourself, it is almost impossible to do alone. Especially with bad habits, bondage, and addictions weighing you down. It is only through Jesus Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in you that will give you the strength to break those negative ties. Please don’t let your pride hold you back from freedom in true salvation like the Israelites in Jeremiah’s time. Learn from them and do not let yourself be your worst enemy.
I pray that everyone reading this message today learned something to help you in your daily walk or to be able to help someone else. I just want to leave you with one last piece of scripture to help you if you are still up against the fence in making that plunge. God bless you all!
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
