Only one can heal us!

Matthew 8:1-4

After he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. 2  And a leper approached, and bowed low before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3  He stretched out his hand and touched him saying, “I am willing. Be clean!” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4  Then Jesus said to him, “See that you do not speak to anyone, but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

Leprosy was a horrifying disease in which there was no cure.  The people were so scared of it spreading to the masses that they would gather the sick and have a priest inspect them to proclaim them as “lepers.” It did not matter the disease, if the people feared any contamination of a disease they did the same action.  These sick people would have then been banished from their towns and sent to a encampment to either die or get better.  This community of “lepers” would care for one another since so many others were afraid to go near them.  I cannot imagine the isolation and hopelessness these poor people had to deal with.

When the leper went to Jesus, he had complete faith that Jesus Christ could heal his illness.  This leper knew that many people would not go near him, but he was desperate for a cure that only Jesus could provide him. Then something amazing happened, our Lord told him that He was willing to heal him and reached out His hand and touched the leper.  Instantly the leper was cured and everyone around was amazed.  Not only did Jesus heal this person because of their faith in Him, but Jesus did not fear the sick and lame.

Today we know that leprosy is curable if treated in the early stages, however, our sins are an incurable disease and we all have it.  There is no dividing the ill, because many times our sins are internal and can only be seen by God. Without the loving touch of Jesus Christ in our lives, we are doomed to die with this serious illness.  We can learn from this leper and have complete faith that we can be healed from our sins and they will be.  Only when we realize the inhibility to handle our own sins can you allow His healing hand to comfort you.  Jesus is willing to heal us all and fill us with the spirit of truth and love if we take the first step of faith and seek Him.

So if you are starting to realize that you are ill, please call out to Jesus because He is always willing to hold out His hand for us. Remember you are not alone or isolated because of your sins, we have all been there and felt the same way at one point and time.  Our enemy tries to feed these seeds of doubt, but we know what the cure is. So never lose hope and with faith all things are possible.
