Luke 5:29-32

9  Then Levi gave a great banquet in his house for Jesus, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others sitting at the table with them. 30  But the Pharisees and their experts in the law complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31  Jesus answered them, “Those who are well don’t need a physician, but those who are sick do. 32  I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Levi left the business of being a corrupt tax collector.  Like most of Jesus’ followers, he held a banquet for Jesus and invited many people to meet Him. Levi was turning away from worldly riches to spiritual riches and was excited about it.  Some of the people in this banquet were known sinners, but Jesus was happy to meet them all.  When the Pharisees and their religious teachers came they have the nerve to ask why did Jesus sit with such scum.  They were the biggest hypocrites in the party because they hid their sins by pointing out the sin of others. They were sinners none the less, however, in public eye they acted as if they were holier than everyone.

The way Jesus handled the situation shows His true character of love, grace, and being salvation minded.  He simply told the Pharisees that healthy people don’t need doctors, but sick ones do.  Jesus was making a clear point in His standing for all people.  Jesus came to heal those who had the humility to accept that they are sinners and not those who thought they were righteous and could do no wrong.  In order to come to God we must all realize that we are sinners and repent for it.  If we think we are blameless, then how can we repent?  To admit your failures to God shows true strength and not weakness.  Many times our pride is what keep us from making this action.  Once our sins are acknowledged, then we can find the Father through Jesus Christ.

I pray that this lesson helps those who are hiding behind their good works or pointing out the sins of others.  If we do this we are no better than the Pharisees.  This lesson was to explain why we need to accept who we are and that we are all sinners.  Once this is understood we can move forward to the only one who can heal us from our sins and grant us life everlasting.  Jesus came to heal the sick and not those who think they are righteous.

Please remember that very important point.  Please have a blessed day y’all.
